Welcome to the Royalhouse DC Church Prayer and Fasting Guide!
As Wesley L. Duewel, a missionary with a heart for God's kingdom, once defined, fasting is a deep spiritual discipline where we set aside our physical hunger to intensify our spiritual appetite through prayer and meditation. This manual is crafted with the members of Royalhouse DC Church in mind, to guide and encourage you on a six-week journey closer to the heart of God.
t's natural to feel nervous about embarking on a spiritual discipline like fasting, but remember that even D.L. Moody, a renowned preacher, recognized the challenge in willingly choosing to fast. Yet, it is in the act of overcoming such challenges that our souls find nourishment and growth.
In a world where the practice of fasting has become rare, especially in Western Christianity, it is vital to reconnect with this biblical tradition. It holds the potential to unlock spiritual power and clarity, as seen in vibrant Christian communities across India, Africa, and China.
Dietrich Bonhoeffer, who remained steadfast in his faith in Nazi Germany, understood the importance of self-restraint in service to Christ. Fasting can serve as a means to honor God, attuning our ears to His voice and empowering us to follow His lead with greater conviction.
Prayer, an integral companion to fasting, is simply conversing with God. It's a two-way dialogue that can take many forms, from the private whispers of the heart to the public proclamations in worship. Jesus Himself provided a model for prayer that is unparalleled in its simplicity and depth.
- Pray by Faith - Trust in the omnipotence of God (Jeremiah 32:17).
- Pray Big - Expect great things from God who works powerfully within us (Ephesians 3:20-21).
- Pray for Others - Share the burdens of fellow believers (Galatians 6:2).
- Do Not Worry - Let thanksgiving shape your requests to God (Philippians 4:6-7).
- Pray With Passion - Approach God with earnestness and humility (Hebrews 5:7).
Praise
Embarking on the sacred practice of prayer, we are reminded to begin with praise, just as Jesus taught us: "Our Father, who is in heaven, Hallowed be Your name". As the Psalmist encourages, let us still our hearts and recognize the sovereignty of God: “Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth.” (Ps. 46:10). Begin your prayers by elevating your spirit to acknowledge the majesty and glory of God. Praise Him for the wonders of creation, His work in the world, and His presence in your life. Let your praise echo the heavenly hosts.
Waiting
In the rush of daily life, waiting on the Lord is a sacred pause that allows us to experience divine rest. "Truly my soul finds rest in God; my salvation comes from him." (Psalm 62:1). In these moments, we embrace the stillness, setting aside our agendas to attune our hearts to the voice of the Lord.
Confession
Confession aligns our hearts with the truth of God's grace. We acknowledge our transgressions and seek to view our sins as Jesus does—as opportunities for redemption and transformation. "Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me... Restore to me the joy of your salvation and grant me a willing spirit, to sustain me." (Psalm 51:10,12).
Read The Word
Scripture is God's voice in text, inviting us into a dynamic dialogue with the Divine. As you read, pray for revelation and guidance: "Speak, Lord, for your servant is listening." Let His Word shape your thoughts, actions, and prayers.
Petition (Ask)
Paul encourages us to bring our requests to God without anxiety (Philippians 4:6). Approach the throne of grace with confidence, knowing your Heavenly Father delights in hearing the desires of your heart.
Intercession
Prayer is not a self-centered act but a selfless offering for the benefit of others. Intercede for your leaders, the church, the lost, and those in need, emulating Christ's example of prioritizing others in prayer.
Pray The Word
There is profound power in praying Scripture. Echo the Psalms, prophets, the teachings of Jesus, and the inspired words of the apostles. Let the divine tapestry of the Bible guide your intercessions and thanksgivings.
Thanksgiving
In gratitude, we remember to thank God not only for blessings received but also for His presence in all circumstances. "Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus." (1 Thessalonians 5:18).
Singing
Worship through song is an act of adoration and spiritual communion. As the Psalms say, "Come before him with joyful songs" (Psalm 100:2b). Let your heart sing with melodies that reflect your love and gratitude to God.
Meditate
Meditation in the Christian tradition involves saturating our minds with the truth of God's Word. Reflect deeply on Scripture, allowing the Holy Spirit to imprint His wisdom upon your heart.
Listen
Prepare to hear from God with a pen and paper at hand
Royalhouse DC Church calls upon its members to come together in prayer for various needs, including those who have yet to find Christ, our church community, global church bodies, persecuted Christians, our leadership, local communities, government officials, and those in need.
To assist you in maintaining focus during prayer, consider employing prayer guides such as the ACTS Model (Adoration, Confession, Thanksgiving, Supplication). These guides can help structure your prayers and keep your thoughts centered on God.
As we journey together through these 21 days of prayer and fasting, may we experience the transformative power of drawing nearer to God. Let us support one another, share our struggles, and ultimately rejoice together in the spiritual growth and victories that lie ahead.
May your fasting be pleasing to the Lord, and may your prayers rise like incense, a sweet fragrance before the throne of grace.
Blessings on your journey,
Royalhouse DC Church.
